RiverStreet Networks earns $1.9 million grant to build fiber network – Area devastated by flooding to benefit from project
Wilkesboro, NC – October 25, 2019 – The U.S. Department of Agriculture awarded a federal grant to RiverStreet Networks in the amount of $1,933,204. The grant is part of the USDA’s Community Connect program and will be used to expand the availability of fiber in the Fair Bluff and Columbus County areas of North Carolina. RiverStreet will match that grant with $290,646, making the total investment in the project of $2,223,850.
“This area has been devastated by flooding. We believe this network will go a long way in contributing to the economic vitality of Fair Bluff and Columbus County. We look forward to witnessing that growth,” said Eric Cramer, President and CEO of RiverStreet.
This grant and matching funds from RiverStreet will be used to construct a 43-mile fiber network passing 347 households in Fair Bluff and Columbus County, NC. This fiber network will make Gig connections speeds possible, meaning consumers will be able to enjoy up to 1000 Megabits per second internet speeds.
“This broadband network will provide significant benefits to Columbus County by improving the economy, access to education and quality of life,” said Cramer. “We are excited about the opportunities this grant, and the network will foster for this area.”
In addition to the homes served, RiverStreet will provide free access to a community center where residents can access the internet free of charge for at least two years following the project completion.
The project is large and will take three years to complete.
