RTG’s General Counsel, Carri Bennet, commented on Verizon’s bid to purchase Verizon Wireless from UK-based Vodafone for $130 billion during two British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) radio programs. Throughout the interviews with the host of Business Matters and the World Business Report, Carri provided RTG’s perspective on what the deal means to both rural consumers and rural wireless providers.
During the interviews, Carri expressed concern on behalf of US consumers that the large purchase price may mean that Verizon will not have the resources to build out its network in rural areas in the near future. However, she also explained that the deal could be beneficial to rural wireless providers and consumers alike should Verizon continue to partner with rural carriers to build-out rural areas. Carri also mentioned that the US government can and should ensure that Verizon makes a commitment to build out rural license areas prior to approving the transaction.
