Legislation has been introduced in both chambers of Congress that threatens to further increase the national deficit while delaying the construction of a nationwide, interoperable broadband network for public safety.
S. 28 and H.R. 607 would give away billions of dollars in public spectrum, shifting the financial burden to our nation’s struggling state and local municipalities. This would only produce a patchwork network, creating significant disadvantages for smaller, rural communities. Public safety can’t afford it, and neither can our economy.
By dedicating the proceeds from spectrum auctions, including the “D Block,” to building out the network, a public auction will save public safety – and the American taxpayer – billions of dollars. Without the auction, the construction and maintenance of a stand-alone network would top $47.7 billion over the course of 10 years. With a national deficit topping $14 trillion, we simply cannot afford to give this spectrum away.
